At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
