The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

Everton: The team travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
