Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such medications must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
