Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
