The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to contact these accounts directly for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.

Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before directing customers to other platforms for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could assist individuals lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Worries

However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting products of uncertain source.

Several professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or prison.

Service Reaction and Content Removal

According to the social media company, the platform has taken down violative material and banned associated keywords and search suggestions. The company stated it was committed to keeping the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of users, filled with images of slimming results, positive reviews and detailed guides for mixing or injecting at home.

After moments of entering one group, a vendor posted contact information, where most transactions occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about weight, health issues or past usage.

Within these communities, posts display dark colored parcels with postal service stickers, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Safety Measures

A representative for Telegram said it regularly monitored harmful content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Warnings

“Individuals are injecting substances they can’t verify. Even if the science behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current cost increases for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are turning to online platforms. But fake injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her staff has already encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet approved … may expose patients to possibly significant medical dangers”.
