In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

A Historic Mayor

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
