Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – after McLaren were valued at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure last September.

Wolff, who owns a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a shareholding in the region of five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos Group, who each also own one-third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The governance of the team stays unaltered, and all three partners are fully committed to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Increase

The deal signifies a significant increase in value of Mercedes F1 after Ineos Group acquired its share for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the growth in market values of F1 teams recently due to the growing popularity of Formula 1 globally.

This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and earned more than $630m (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the most successful sports movie to date.

Present Standings

Mercedes are runner-up in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three races remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races this year and is fourth in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a unprecedented eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
